Federal HVAC energy-efficiency standards changed with the arrival of SEER2, and every new heating and air conditioning system installed today has to meet them. Here is what the change means for an Oklahoma homeowner.
What SEER2 actually is
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER2 replaces the original SEER guidelines with a new testing method that better reflects real-world conditions — specifically, the external static pressure a system fights against in an actual home's ductwork. For the first time, the standards also account for the different climates across the country, so the minimum requirement depends on where you live.
How it affects your home
The good news: a higher required efficiency rating means any new system uses less power to hold the same temperature. That shows up on your monthly utility bill, and it means less strain on the grid and the environment.
The trade-off: the technology needed to hit those numbers costs more to build, so equipment and installation prices rose alongside the standards. It is worth talking through the options — sometimes the higher-efficiency unit pays for itself in a few Oklahoma summers, and sometimes it doesn't.
The new minimums
Because SEER2 uses a different calculation, we list both the new rating and its old-scale equivalent.
Air conditioning condensing units. In the northern region, the minimum rises from 13.0 SEER to 13.4 SEER2 (equivalent to 14.0 SEER). The South and Southwest — which includes Oklahoma — moves from 14.0 SEER to 14.3 SEER2 (equivalent to 15.0 SEER).
Heat pumps. No regional split. Heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2023 must meet a minimum of 14.3 SEER2 (equivalent to 15.0 SEER).
Single packaged units. A packaged unit must meet 13.4 SEER2 (equivalent to 14.0 SEER), and 14.0 SEER units can still be installed nationwide.
Ductless mini-splits. Same requirements as air conditioning condensing units, including the regional variations.
What it means when you replace a system
If you are replacing an aging air conditioner or heat pump in Tulsa or anywhere in Green Country, your new equipment will meet the Southeast region standards. Ask your contractor for the SEER2 rating of what they are quoting, not just the old SEER number, so you are comparing systems on the same scale.
