It started the way most kitchen leaks do. Quietly. A homeowner in the Woodhill Hollow neighborhood of Tulsa reached under the sink for dish soap and found the cabinet floor damp. No burst pipe, no spraying water — just a shallow puddle that kept coming back no matter how often they wiped it dry. Their gut said garbage disposal, and they called American Home Pros to find out for sure.

That instinct was right. Slow leaks under a kitchen sink cost far more than they appear to, because the water rarely stays where you can see it. It wicks into particleboard cabinet bases and seeps toward the subfloor, and mold thrives in those damp, dark conditions.

Colt, our plumbing manager, found the answer fast: the disposal housing had cracked. No amount of tightening or resealing would stop it. He handled the replacement on the same visit with a Premium WB 1/2 HP unit, and the cabinet was dry before he left the driveway.

What the homeowner had already tried

They wiped the cabinet base dry and lined it with towels to track where water collected. They checked supply lines for drips and felt along the drain pipes for moisture. Running the faucet while watching underneath produced nothing — yet the dampness kept returning, especially after a dishwasher cycle or a round of grinding food waste.

Two other clues stood out: the cabinet floor had darkened and softened along one edge, and a faint musty smell had settled into the space. Together, those point to a leak that has been active far longer than the homeowner realized.

Diagnosing it properly

A disposal sits at the lowest point of the sink assembly, so gravity carries every leak in that cabinet toward it whether the unit caused the problem or not. Plenty of homeowners replace a disposal only to discover the real leak came from a sprayer hose.

So Colt towel-dried the whole cabinet and tested each water source in isolation:

  • Supply lines at the shutoff valves and faucet connections — dry under pressure.
  • Faucet base and sprayer hose, a failure that mimics a disposal leak almost perfectly — dry.
  • Sink flange, checked for movement and hardened plumber's putty.
  • P-trap and tailpiece, checked for loose slip nuts and worn washers.
  • Dishwasher discharge hose, flexed and run through a full drain cycle — held.

That left the disposal. He filled the sink basin and released the full volume through the unit. Water appeared along the lower half of the housing, weeping from a hairline fracture rather than any threaded joint. Rust staining below the crack confirmed water had tracked the same path for weeks.

Why we replaced it instead of patching it

Epoxy and sealants can't bond to a wet, corroded interior surface, and they can't survive the vibration a disposal produces every time it runs. Patching also hides the failure while the crack keeps spreading through metal that has already thinned from the inside — and the next leak usually arrives larger, and often while nobody is home.

A cracked housing means the unit has aged out. Even a temporary patch would have left this homeowner with a corroded motor, worn grinding components, and no warranty. The new unit brought fresh seals, a factory warranty, and a full reset on the clock — for less than a year of stopgap visits.

The scope of work

Colt shut off power at the breaker and verified the circuit was dead before touching a connection. He emptied and covered the cabinet, set a pan for the water still sitting in the grinding chamber, drained and disconnected the dishwasher hose, separated the tailpiece, and lowered the failed unit out.

Then came the inspection that separates a lasting install from a callback: old putty scraped from the flange opening, sink basin checked for corrosion and stress cracks, mounting hardware assessed, tailpiece and P-trap checked for scale and worn washers, and the electrical connection examined for moisture and heat damage.

Installation followed manufacturer spec — new flange set in fresh plumber's putty, the disposal locked into the mounting assembly and tightened evenly so it hangs square, dishwasher inlet knocked out properly and clamped, new gaskets on the discharge tube, and a secured electrical connection. A unit mounted under tension vibrates against its own drain connections and starts leaking again within a year.

Testing came last: the unit run empty, a full basin released through it, a complete dishwasher drain cycle, then a flashlight-and-towel check of the flange, housing, discharge tube, P-trap, and cabinet floor — repeated several minutes later, because some leaks only show once connections settle. Everything read dry.

Why 1/2 HP fits most Tulsa kitchens

Horsepower gets oversold. A 1/2 HP unit handles the daily food waste of a typical household without difficulty. Higher horsepower makes sense for kitchens with heavy daily prep volume, but most homes don't need it — and an aggressive disposal grinds waste faster than older drain lines can carry it away. How to prevent this in your own kitchen

Keep the wrong things out of the disposal. Grease and cooking oil solidify in the line. Coffee grounds, eggshells, rice, pasta, and potato peels form a paste. Celery, corn husks, and onion skins wrap the grinding components. Bones, fruit pits, and dropped utensils cause most impact damage. Run cold water before, during, and 15–20 seconds after grinding, feed waste in small amounts, and never pour drain chemicals into a disposal — they corrode the chamber from the inside.

Get a professional inspection. Corroded supply valves, deteriorating washers, hairline housing cracks, and slowly scaling drain lines all develop long before they announce themselves.
